  1. Cantilevers are often found to be failing and falling. The main reasons behind these failures are inadequate design and wrong placement of steel. As explained in detail in last episodes, in a cantilever, the main steel has to be near the top face and not near the bottom face. A cantilever slab need not have uniform thickness like the normal slab. Keep it thickest at the support and thin at free end. Get a cantilever designed from an engineer instead of believing the mason. Must watch its steel placement or get it checked from a qualified engineer. Canopies, sunshades, balconies etc all are cantilevers and need special attention.

Tip of the Moment

Check sunken slab surfaces for any cracks. If there, cut them into small ‘V’s and fill them with a polymer like ‘crack fill’. Now mix 1 part of acrylic emulsion (liquid) with 2 parts of polymer modified cement (powder) by weight to form a cream like paste. Apply 2 coats of it with brush on the slab surface.
