1 To keep in tune with the present trend, you may choose imported marble for the living room, dining room and lobby. This is the best but costliest flooring option. Otherwise choose vitrified tiles for this portion of the house. Next option is of Makrana marble. Choose as per your budget. Note that marble flooring may prove much costlier than vitrified tile flooring. All the three options are good. Skirting has to be of the same material. You may also choose wooden skirting as it makes a beautiful combination with marble and vitrified tiles. 2 Provide 9 mm to 12 mm thick laminated wooden flooring in the bed rooms. If you can’t afford to provide it in all bed rooms, let it be there in the master bed room at least. In other bed rooms, provide vitrified tile flooring. If you don’t prefer wooden laminates, choose vitrified tile flooring for all the bed rooms. Last option is of Makrana marble. Provide wooden skirting with laminates and matching skirting with tiles or marble. 3 Many queries are received asking for better choice between marble and vitrified tiles. Between the two materials, vitrified tiles have the upper edge. These have zero water absorption property, need no grinding and polishing, give uniform look, are mechanically stronger, take much lesser time than marble flooring and above all, prove cheaper than marble flooring. Only factor against them is that these look artificial while marble gives a natural look. Now, such great variety of vitrified tiles is available in the market that any shade and color, looking quite natural can be chosen. 4 In bathrooms and toilets, use antiskid ceramic tiles. Today, these make unanimous choice. Though many people like to choose marble flooring yet it should be avoided. Marble is a porous material and becomes slippery when wet. On bathroom walls, provide imported or Indian glazed ceramic tiles. Keep the height of tiles on walls as 7 feet above the floor. There is an increased trend for providing tiles up to the ceiling. Prefer to keep the height as 7 feet only. These look better than tiles provided for the full height of bathrooms. 5 In kitchen also, provide antiskid ceramic tile flooring. Here also, many people are choosing marble flooring but better is to avoid it as marble absorbs water and turns slippery when wet. It also invites stains. Antiskid ceramic tile flooring in kitchen may rather prove cheaper than marble flooring. Provide matching skirting. 6 Provide a polished granite counter top in kitchen. Don’t use marble for counter-top. Chilly powder and turmeric powder will soon leave its stains on it. America uses synthetic counters like artificial acrylic or polyester based solid materials in counter tops because granite is not easily available there and is very expensive. In India, Granite is easily available. So don’t follow America here. Use Granite and feel luckier. Synthetic counters have arrived in India and many people are adopting them as there is always a craze for new things. Indian cooking methods don’t support their use. Spices, hot food, plenty of oil have their effect on synthetic counters. Hot pots too leave their marks on them. Their cost is very high in India. Use polished Granite for counter and provide glazed ceramic tiles up to 700 mm height above the counter top. 7 In balconies also, provide antiskid ceramic tile flooring. Second choice is of vitrified tiles. Provide matching skirting. In servant quarters, provide ceramic tile flooring. If you have left any open-to-sky cut-outs in your house, provide Kota stone or Jaisalmer stone flooring in them. In the paved area around the house, you may provide pre polished Kota stone with marble strips or Baroda Green stone or interlocking tile flooring instead of usual and rough looking concrete paving. 8 Always use an aluminium strip at the junction of floor of the house with that of kitchen, bathrooms and the verandahs. Use a 16 gauge or thicker strip. A glass strip if provided at these junctions may soon get broken and may hurt naked feet. Keep the floor levels of the kitchen, all bathrooms and all verandahs half inch down than the level of floor in rooms. This will avoid flow of water into the rooms. See that the doors to kitchen and bathrooms are so provided that these strike against the strip when in closed position. More tips will follow next week. Till then, happy building!

Tip of the Moment
The joints between the top horizontal member of frame and the two side verticals are called dovetail joints. There is no horizontal member at the bottom in the frames for doors.
